New Features From Windows 11

Windows 11 is bringing new changes to life, including its first name change in six years. Here is a list of some of the main features Windows 11 has:

  • A cleaner interface: Microsoft has simplified the design and user experience for Windows users. It has a Mac-like appearance, with rounded corners, pastel shades, and a centered Start menu.
  • Snap Layouts: Windows 11 allows you to organize your windows and optimize your screen, so you can have all the screens you need. You can choose between different sizes and layouts and combine up to four separate applications on the same screen.
  • Integrated Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams will be integrated into the taskbar, allowing you to quickly connect through text, chat, voice, or video with all of your contacts. You will also be able to instantly mute, unmute, or start presenting directly via the taskbar.

Windows 10 vs. Windows 11: should you upgrade?

Before anything else, you will only be able to upgrade to the new operating system if your PC passes the tests in Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. If your PC fails the test and you can’t upgrade to the new operating system, Microsoft will still support Windows 10 through 2025.

The main changes across both operating systems are:

  • Taskbar location: You can’t modify the location of your taskbar with the new operating system. It will be at the bottom of the screen.
  • Start menu groups: you won’t be able to group tiles as you would in Windows 10. Microsoft is making the Start Menu as standard as possible.
  • Tablet mode: Windows 11 won’t include a dedicated mode for tablet devices. This functionality will be reconfigured, and some of it will happen automatically.
  • Cortana: You won’t be able to see Cortana pinned to your taskbar once you upgrade your operating system. It’s unclear what Microsoft has planned for its digital assistance, but it might get repositioned as a business tool.

System requirements to run Windows 11 on your computer

Here are the minimum requirements your computer should meet to run the new operating system:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
  • System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
  • Graphics card: DirectX 12 compatible graphics / WDDM 2.x
  • Display: >9” with HD Resolution (720p)

How much will it cost to get Windows 11?

If you are a Windows 10 user, you can upgrade to Windows 11 at no cost. All computers that meet the minimum requirements will have the chance to upgrade for free.

If you buy a new PC between now and the general Windows 11 release, you will also be eligible for the free upgrade. Microsoft will also release computers with the new operating system, so if you buy a PC after the general release, you will have Windows 11 already installed.

When will you be able to get Windows 11?

Although there is no exact date on when Windows 11 will be released, Microsoft revealed that Windows 10 users can upgrade their operating system starting this holiday season.
